Man can only see that which he can touch; what he cannot touch he cannot see and what is unseen is unknown. Only when the gates have been rendered asunder is entry to this world granted, and few visitors who see this realm return.

Suicide Attempt Foiled
NEW YORK - The young woman pulled from the trcks at Brooklyn's Grand Army Plaza subway station last week has been identified as Ms. Rachel Hayward of Brooklyn. According to eyewitnesses, Ms. Hayward had thrown hejrself in front of an oncoming train, but was rescued at the last moment by a herotic bystander. A spokesman for the New York Police Department describes the anonymous saviour as " a real Samaritan." Ms. Hayward is currenting recovering from her injuries at Brooklyn Hospital, where she is listed in fair condition.
[GMs note: You all know Rachel Hayward somehow, an old friend, someone you went to school with, ex-lover, former co-worker somehow, etc. You all find the article in the New York Times.
She is remembered as being quite intelligent - a math major- and generally amicable, but restless and given to sudden mood swings. A very private persoin, Rachel Hayward was difficult to get to know. Evertually, "in pursuit of herself," she drifted out of touch. You all have not been in contact with her for some years and are unsure of her current residence, but the sad news of her suicide attempt in the New York Times evokes her memory.

"....and in other news today, a woman tried to commit suicide by jumping onto the tracks of an oncoming subway." Ugh, why do I even bother watching this stuff? It's all just so depressing. Sprawled out on the bed in his hotel room, Kage picks up the remote. Let's see what else is on. Just as he's about to change the channel, "It's just been released that the woman's name is Rachel Hayward..." Wait a second, why does that name sound so familiar? Oh! I remember now! We went to school together. Sitting up, Kage turns up the tv. "Lucky for Ms. Hayward, a young man stepped in and rescued her just before the train hit." Wow, talk about a lucky break. Why would she do that though? "The NYPD Chief of Police made a statement earlier today, saying that the young man is "a real Samaritan." Details of this individual have not yet been released. Now on to the weather. Jim?" Heh, leave it to the mediamongers to make something like an attempted suicide sound like breakfast conversation. Heartless bastards. Ah well, at least Rachel is alright. I'm gonna have to try and get a hold of her somehow. Something doesn't sound right. Kage let's loose a jaw breaking yawn. "That's gonna have to wait till tommorrow though." Shutting off the tv, Kage lies down, thoughts of home carrying him off into the realm of dreams.

He sat behind his desk, looking over the last case file he had, over a week ago. A haunting in a a family house, easy enough to locate the source, and get it removed, though something about it nagged him.
The Television was on, tuned to the news - a gentle background noise that provided the occassional distraction when he needed it. The noise came into stark clarity, as the news report spoke the name Rachel Hayward.
James frowned, looking up from the case file, and turned up the volume. A flashed image of the girl, and he shook his head.
Rachel Hayward was the daughter of two friends, both dead for years. He hadn't seen the kid for years, and here she was...on the news, saying how someone saved her life...
James closed the file, placed it on his desk, and got up. It was a hour drive to Brooklyn, he just hope he didn't get caught in traffic.

Sipping tea in a Starbucks in Hartsdale New York, Sophie was intently browsing the web on their pay for use computer and found an article that peaked her interest. Her Cousin Andrew's ex-fiancee and her good friend, Rachel Hayward, was just saved from near suicide. Gathering her things, she logged off the computer and jogged to the nearby train station to catch the next train to NYC.

[GM's note: For reference, all dice rolls need to be done in this thread using the board's standard dice code. Reference for it is in the OoC. Thank you.]
Each recalls seeing a similar article a few days ago, which is probably why Rachel's made such headlines. A brief search finds that the paper had yet to be thrown out and the article is once again found.

Woman Saved from Certain Death
Police credit the daring heroics of a perfect stranger with saving the life of an unknown woman late last night after she had thrown herself in front of a subway train at Brooklyn's Grand Army Plaza Station.
A small crowd of commuters waiting for the 11:49 train watched in horror as a young woman jumped onto the tracks. With the train rapidly approaching, a quick-thinking bystander climbed down from the platform and pulled the woman to safety, an instant before the train rushed into the station.
The young woman, who has not been identified, is listed in fair condition at Brooklyn Hospital. The unsung hero was treated for minor cuts and released.
Everyone arrives in the city by the following day. Play begins then.

Hopping off the train from Hartsdale, Sophie looked at the time, it was now noon. If she hurried she might be able to make it to the hospital to visit her friend.
---------------- A two hour cab ride later -------------
Arriving at the hospital a little after 2:20 pm, Sophie looked around and entered the building. She quickly walked up to the main nurse desk and asked in a sweet tone from the male nurse "Which room is Rachel Hayward in? I am an old friend of hers and I would love to see how she is doing. My name is Sophie Lawrence."

The male nurse opened his mouth to say something when a large and very angry looking cantankerous duty nurse stepped forward.
"I don't care if you're the Prince of Dubai. We're not allowing visitors to see the patient," she said, her words dripping with disdain and barely repressed hostility.
Her arms crossed over her chest, pushing up her massive breasts and pushing down her distended stomach. Her eyes were narrowed and a scornful look on her mouth. She seemed to very angry with people and taking it out on Sophie, or maybe it was just pretty women in general. She looked like a former rough-and-tumble badgirl biker chick who's body and looks went far south.
The beginnings of broken capillaries at the tip of her nose along with the pony-keg sized paunch revealed much of the woman's offduty habits though the general flabbiness of her frame and large waist revealed that she was no stranger to the sweeter things in life and was a case of onset diabetes waiting to happen.
It was going to take more then a sweet voice and pretty face to get her to let someone past her watchful eye.

"I am really starting to hate these conferences." After spending 6 hours sitting in a stuffy auditorium listening to the "experts" in the field drone on and on, Kage heads over to a Starbucks to recharge. Hmm, it's about 1330 now. After what happened yesterday, Rachel is probably in the hospital under observation. If I grab a cab now, I should be in Brooklyn around 1410, 1420. That's plenty of time to visit and try to find out what the hell is going on. I wonder if she even remembers me....
-----------------------------------------A 50 Minute Cab Ride Later-----------------
Kage strides into the Brooklyn hospital at about 1425. As he heads towards the reception desk, he notices a pretty, young woman squaring off against a behemoth of a nurse. "This could be interesting." Deciding that it would probably be in the best interest of the lady for someone to step in, he heads over to them. Addressing the fairer of the two he says "Excuse me, is there a problem here?"

"Ma'am, I would love to see her, she is an old friend of mine and I have come a long way to see her. If you won't let me see her can you at least deliver her a message for me and tell her that I miss her and I hope she is okay. My name is Sophie Lawrence." Sophie tried her best to look sad and sorry for intruding on the nurse's space.

The angry butch nurse narrowed her eyes further and scowled, clearly not buying the line.
"Are you sure you know the patient? You sound like some of those reporters that have been trying to talk to her..."

"She is my cousin's ex-fiancee and an old friend of mine, I went to High school with her." Pulling out her iPhone she brought up some pictures from her Myspace containing her and Rachel. Showing it to the nurse she said, "See what I mean?"

[GM Note: I'll give you a bonus for the picture proof]
The nurse hmph'd and scowled, looking at the iphone.
"Fine, fine, you can visit her."
The nurse consulted some charts.
"She's on the second floor, room 2301."
The nurse turned and walked away, still visibly angry.
------------
Rachel's injuries were serious, but not life-threatening, consisting mainly of severe abrasions and contusions, caused by her fall to the tracks. She also exhibited some signs of a concussion: shallow breathing, lapsing in and out of consciousness, skin cold, clammy and pale.
She's confined to her bed, an IV in her arm and various machines hooked up to her.

Approaching the young lady, Kage clears his throat and asks "Excuse me, I couldn't help but overhear that you're a friend of Rachel's. Would you mind if I tagged along? Rachel and I went to school together some years ago."

"Well I dont mind but I do beleive the nurses might, you should probably check with them first to see if more then one visitor is allowed at a time." Quickly headed to Rachel's room Sophie looks around and takes in the sights of the room. Sitting down at Rachel's bedside she reaches over and grasps her hand in both of hers.
"How are you sweetheart?" Sophie leaned in and looked Rachel in the eyes.

Deciding that he didn't really want to have to deal with the nurses, he gives the young lady a 10 minute head start and heads to the room that Rachel is in.

It was the next day before James was actually able to make it to Brooklyn Hospital. He had remembered, and searched for the article that had appeared a few days before - another woman jumping in the subway. It was odd, certainly. He would check it out after he got done at the hospital.
He walked into Brooklyn Medical, and went to the admissions desk, "Excuse me nurse, Which room is Rachel Hayward in?"

All three people had made it up to the room. Sophie was trying to talk to Rachel, but not seeming to have much success.
Her voice, shaky and uncertain, kept asking who everyone was as if she could not remember anything.

Pulling, the group aside Kage says "It looks like Rachel is still recovering from what happened. Perhaps we should give her another day or two to pull herself back together. My name is Kage by the way."

James walked down the hall of the Medical Center, and stopped as he heard the voices coming from the room. According to the Admittance desk, the room was Rachel's, he just stopped to listen as best he could to the conversation, with someone apparently named Sophie..
Then another voice suggested the others leave the room,he stood outside, waiting to see the results. Maybe Rachel would remember him if he went in alone.

Sophie's questioning was cut off a moment or two later by Rachel breaking down into hysterical sobbing. She began to shake and cry and try to curl up into a ball.
A moment later, an orderly rushed in, pushing James in front of him into the room then moving around to reach the bed. Pulling a syringe from one of the drawers in a nearby stand he expertly tore loose the protective covering. With one arm he held Rachel in place while he stuck her with the other, administaring the sedative. Within a few seconds she began to calm noticibly before passing out into a ligh, but restful slumber.
"Ms. Hayward's had spells like that before," he explained. "Sometimes she wakes up shrieking. Most of the time, it's just nonsense, but once in a while you can make out some of what she says. Last night for instance, she was screaming as thought someone were in the room with her, trying to kill her. Of course, she was alone; it was very disturbing for the other patients to hear. But then, Ms. Hayward's not the first addict we've had in here."

"Well," the orderly replied. "The hallucinations and delusions she's suffering from are the result of prolonged drug use, not of any concussion. She's also has a high tolerance to morphine. She's probably been using it for years."

"Was a tox-screen run when she came in? Did it show morphine in her system?" Sophie was easily holding back the anger she felt towards the hospital thinking one of her best friends was an addict when she knew full well the girl wasnt.

"You'd have to talk to the attending physician, Dr. Wingate. He'd be able to tell you everything. We've also got the lady's purse locked away for safe keeping if you're interested..."
