I have a mandatory evac order for all of my Parish. Since New Orleans is being closed to all traffic now, I have to head west.

I'll give ya'll a hollar when I find out where I am, hopefully the hotel I find has wireless net

My folks may just go to a nearby shelter, or stay home. I'm going to tape and board all the windows with what little wood we can find. Whatever we do, we're running out of time.

Not neccessarily Ace. I've been through a few hurricanes now and this one doesn't look to be that bad. Hell I survived Ivan and Dennis just fine and I live damn near right on the water.

It appears Baton Rouge won't get the worst of it, though. Winds around 50 kts, very heavy rain. The biggest worry around here will likely be flooding and tornadoes. Hopefully that'll be all. But if it takes a westward track, I'm fucked. I can only hope that won't be the case.

Katrina will be coming ashore tonight. The outer band of clouds have already reached here, bringing light rain. About midnight (noon where you're at), it'll likely be at its worst.

By the way, take shelter. Maybe you gotta' disconnect yourself during the storm if there's a lotta' lightning.

I likely will be offline for a few days. Power failure is a given, considering how antiquated and unreliable the power grid is.

But I'm indoors, we've got some non-perishable food for about a week, water, and I taped up and boarded the windows. I should be fine.

BTW, I motion for this thread to be booted to GD, it's too important to be a throwaway Testing thread, IMNSHO.

Not to be overly sadistic in this instance but damn I am glad I'm not you guys!

Of course take into account my area has been hit with two hurricanes in less then a year that were rated at above cat 3 when they hit. We still haven't recovered fully.

I'm worried most about my Aunt. She's at Oschner in NO because her husband is there on his deathbed, and now she can't escape. She's trapped at the hospital.

Category 5. Slow moving. The levee system of the city is designed to stand, at best, a fast-moving Category 3. Landfall will be approximately 7 AM. High tide is at 7:02 AM. Below sea level, and 100,000 people did not evacuate.

Ditto. I don't know much about Hurricanes, levee systems or architecture in that part of the world, but from what I've gleaned from the news reports, things don't sound good. I shall keep all available appendages crossed on and pray to any deities who may be interested in listening to my sorry agnostic arse behalf of those in the area.

Hurricanes, cyclones, tornados etc are usually given female names, for an obvious joke. Male names don't have the same kind of kick to it, I guess.

I mean if you hear on the news that Cyclone Robert is coming to town you'd think they were talking about like, a clown or some shit. But if it's Cyclone Beatrice, you instead think "Mother Nature is a big fat bitch."

Actually, tornados aren't given names- they come and go too quickly for that.

Hurricanes/Tropical Storms/etc. are given both male and female names, on an alternating, alphabetical basis.

If a tornado hangs around long enough for a name, it means that we are royally fucked.

But moving on I just want to say good luck for the guys in the path. Stay safe.

Update: Katrina has downgraded to a Category 4.

However, it's still at over 150 mph, and edging ever closer to New Orleans. So don't be celebrating just yet.
