"Because I can compensate for the worst of its problems, which is mainly being under-gunned," Pathfinder explained, putting on speed. "Otherwise, its speed and low profile fits my purpose perfectly. And it lets me beat you to base."

The little tank was rapidly outpacing Cavalier as he spoke, at only the 'base' speed for the model.

Stephanie stepped out of the hatch and onto the cold, cold deck of the ship. He closed the hatch and walked to the railing. She needed a breath of fresh air. It was stifling inside and stank too much of confined bodies, tobacco, and machine oil.

"Hey doc," said Corporal Thompson. He was flicking a butterfly knife back and forth in his hands.

"Hi John," she said warily.

"What's a matt- oh. This." He put the knife away. "Just something to do with my hands. Black out regs mean no smoking on deck even if I wasn't trying to cut back."

He gestured into the darkness. "Can barely make it out, but there's our escort. One ship, away from U-boat hunting territory and we still rate a destroyer. If I hadn't seen what I'd seen . . ."

"Tell me about it," said Stephanie.

"Doc, I know there's a lot of things above my paygrade here, but what the fuck, I mean-"

"I have three brothers," said Stephanie. "It's not the first fucking time I've heard the fucking word, okay?" she said with a smile.

"Right," he said. "Anyway, what is that stuff? I mean I recognize some of it, but the rest, the rest is like something out of some Buck Rogers serial but real."

"That's about it," said Stephanie. "This much I can tell you. There's a world up there-" she pointed at the night sky, "inhabited by intelligent machines with the ability to travel to other worlds. They're fighting their own war. Some of them crashed here. They're far, far in advance of our science."

"Oh I believe that."

"The Germans found some. That's what made Cobra Commander the head Nazi. The Americans found a crashed ship with shut down machines buried somewhere. They reactivated them and now we have machine allies of our own."

"And where do we come in?"

"We made a find of our own. A bunch of paleontologists found a lot more than dinosaur bones when they went hunting. Of course, governments being governments, no one told any of their allies a damn thing until they pretty much had to which means we've all been fumbling in the dark. Then there's the whole 'need to know' thing. Anyway, some cards got placed face up. Don't ask me how, I just get crazy sounding orders from up top. We're to deliver our cargo of what fell out of the sky and what we've been build based on that to the base in Estonia where there will be Autobots, who are the good robots, and cooperate in whatever operations are going to be run out of there."

"What are they going to do?"

"Kill Nazis I guess," said Stephanie. "Need to know and I don't. Liason and tech work. I imagine I'll be playing some version of robot doctor and you'll play guard while the other boys play with robots and break things."

Forward Command Base Coldstaph
Ten miles Southeast of Narva

Estonia had suffered, that much was assured. Only recently freed from Nazi and Decepticon rule, the land looked depleted, sickened...some would even venture to say dead. Even to the Autobot's sensors, it would seem as if the life of the land itself had been drained, leaving everything, from ground, to rock, to sky, a perpetual shade of miserable gray.

Waiting for the Autobots and their G.I. Joe accompaniment at the end of the trek would be their temporary headquarters, where they could recoup, recharge, and rest between offensives - a massive stone and metal fortress not unlike something seen back on the Autobot's native Cybertron - it's construction put it's placing somewhere in the past several years.

The push which ousted it's former occupants left portions of the giant structure damaged - walls crumbled and blackened, a sea-ward facing tower brought down to a near molten slag-heap - though it was still servicable. Even now, repairs where underway to bring the fortress back to trim, human artillery lined the walls, along with weapons nests.

"There it is," Spirit said from his jeep over the comms, "The Spirits do not even linger amoungst this place, so foreboding it be." The native-american man closed his eyes, even as Flash radioed back, "Yeah, well, we chased a buncha Snakes and their trigger happy robot-buddies. The Living or the Dead could want to be around that place for any length of time when they had it."

Several other Joes said something over the comms, but most of it was normal chatter, as the shadow of the fortress loomed overhead.

Pathfinder looked over the fortress, and the dead ground around it, with unease. "Last time I saw something like this was Cybertron...," he said over the comms, breaking into the Joe's conversations. His cybernetic voice was low and uncharacteristicly serious. "It's like they drained all the Energon out of the very ground....."

"Alright sports fans," came Crosswind's voice on the old Autobot channel, only now deciding to speak up to his rather noisy compatriots. "Looks like you kids are getting stuffed aboard that riveted goose you call a cargo plane. Ya'll have fun now, I'll go scout out what our real base looks like!"

With that, he sent another radio to the control tower of this rather ordinary U.S. Army base. "Crosswind to tower, requesting clearance to depart - destination, Coldstaph. Over."

It took a few moments for a reply to come back - G.I. Joe meddling to make sure nobody asked any uncomfortable questions, he guessed. Soon enough though, he got a reply. "Control tower to Crosswind, you are cleared to take off, your flight path will be the straight and narrow."

"Acknowledged Tower, I'm off to kiss the skies," Crosswind replied, as all four of propellers spun up at once, the P-38 turned back onto the runway. With a sudden (and somewhat surprising) burst of speed, the heavy fighter fairly leapt into the sky above.

Not able to resist a sigh of relief as he cleared the U.S. Army base's airspace, Crosswind relaxed a bit as he engaged his boosters and low level to shave off an hour or so from his trip time, without making people too suspicious. Though he'd rarely admit it, he never much liked being on the ground, despite his training. Being in the sky, with all directions open to him is where he felt at home.

Hunter stepped up out of the hatch to look at the devastation. "Damn, and I heard this place was supposed to be nothing but green, forests, and swamps for as far as the eye could see. Don't worry though Spirit, I'm sure this place will come back to life by the time we've kicked the snakes and the Decepti-creeps tails."

Hunter wasn't so sure of that as he pretended to be, but no reason to be a downer on this from the very beginning.

Pathfinder pulled into the fort and off to the side before transforming. The small tank separated from its treads, the treads forming into legs and feet as the top of the tank formed a torso, arms, and head. The machine guns vanished into Subspace, to be called forth as needed as tank weapons or as a Cybertronian-sized four-barrel pistol, while the long barrel of the main gun locked itself down Pathfinder's right arm.

He was just as small in this form as he was in tank, approximately 15ft from ground to the top of his rounded head. His armor plating was still the olive-drab of the tank's camo pattern, the unarmored parts blued to prevent reflections. His blue optics, set in a cheerful-seeming humanoid face, looked around the base curiously. "Whichever 'Cons were here, they weren't much for decorations."

"Sweet Primus, what in the Pits happened here?"

Cavalier had seen this all before of course, back on Cybertron, but he clearly had not expected to encounter it on Earth. Not on this scale, certainly.

Unlike Pathfinder, Cavalier remained in tank mode, his enormous main gun tracking back and forth over the ruined Decepticon base, and the energon-stripped dirt.

"Whichever cons were here," he said in response to Pathfinder's comment, "are gonna wish they'd stayed in the CR chambers once I'm done with them..."

Rolling into the base with the supplies, Overload ejected from his train form, buzzing into the air, low enough to not be noticed by any crude radar. "Lifeless. Energon or hope, doesn't matter. Glad Prime approved this operation now." Buzzing near to the human troops, the little drone unfolded and hit the dirt with a robot form about as tall as them, if wider than most by far. "Name's Overload. Sorry for the silent treatment on the way in."

"That's because he's old," Pathfinder quipped to the Joes about Overload. "He has to turn things over in his processor a while before the audio works." One of these 4million year old machines calling the other 'old'. One has to wonder how many eons they've seen.

Pathfinder got back to business quickly. "Do you think the 'Cons found a way to drain Earth like they did Cybertron, Overload?"

After circling the base twice, Crosswind was impressed by the devastation of the area. Rebuilding would be a chore, but he'd helped do such a thing before. Granted, this would be the first time in full planetary gravity.

Landing on a short (and mostly serviceable) airstrip, Crosswind's right forward landing wheel fell into a pothole, causing him to stop very quickly. "Oh, by the rusting skidplate of Cybertron," he grumbled to himself, as his internal diagnostic told him he'd be spending about an hour with the welder for this one. Transforming, the sky camouflaged P-38 twin-engine heavy American Army-designed fighter smoothly transformed into a tall, and well-built robot; one of the few who used the visor design for sensors in robot form, instead of the more often-used twin eyes.

Engaging the jets on his back for just a second to power a quick forward dash, he landed near the others, and walked up to check out the ones assembled so far. Nodding to the others as he approached in way of greeting, he spoke up as he did. "That runway needs some attention, that's for damn sure. Evenin', 'bots."

Hunter took a good look at Overload and shook his head a bit. "Well it's good to know they make you robots in human-sized packages. That'll be a lot easier to put down if the Decepticons have those too."

Hunter looked over as the P-38 transformed as well. "How about we go about fixing the defenses first if you don't mind flyboy." He grinned and then stepped down onto solid ground once again, looking back at some of the other Joes.

"So what are we looking at, beaches and sunshine for a week?"

Pathfinder laughed aloud at Hunter's 'joke'. "Hate to remind you, Hunter... but Overload's the strongest one here." The Autobot walked over to where Overload had come to a stop with the supply cars, carefully opening the door on one of them. "You are right, tho. Com'on, Crosswind, Cavalier, lets' get this stuff unloaded."

"They do make them my size. I can tell you what happened to the last 'bot who underestimated Rumble, though." Overload strode over towards the train. The engine was.. Transforming. Without the miniature Autobot, it was more sluggish, but it slowly knelt and lifted the little bot, lifting it into place in it's chest. In seconds, the larger battlesuit was moving as smoothly as any Cybertronian, unloading gear.

Chuckling at the others, Crosswind simply helped the others begin offloading boxes from they'd been stored during transport. "Well, at least we don't have shots whizzing around our sensors this time, so that's good. We might even get the main generators started up without a couple of them exploding!"

"Don't worry about repairs to the fortress," Flash said, climbing out of a armored Jeep. A bandolier of gernades were strapped around his chest, as he looked to the 'bots and several of the Joe's which were moving into the deserted fortress. "If SATCOM was right, we've got less than three hours before the snakes and their armor get here. They've been itching to take this place back ever since they lost it a few weeks ago."

Flash was a middling sized caucassian, his head was shaved clean, and he wore a standard issue Army uniform which seemed permanantly wrinkled. The only thing which gave away his role as a Joe was a patch sewed on the right shoulder of his shirt, and his dogtags.

"We need the artillery settled in, Ivan's bringing some armor out to help, but it's time we got our hands dirty to."

Along the perimeter of Coldstaph, howlitzers were being set up, along with what looked to be one of the packet rocket-launchers onside of several AA cannons.

"Well if the Cons and Snakes are gonna make an effort to retake this little patch of real estate," said Cavalier as he drove up to the others, "then I'd say we should go out and throw a wrench into their plans rather than sitting here and waiting for them to get all their petro-rabbits in a row. A little spoiling attack ought to confuse everything nicely and put 'em off their game long before they get close enough to do any damage to the base or the humans."

He glanced around at the other bots and the Joes working nearby. "Anybody else feel like making a raid?" he asked. If he was allowed to go out on a spoiling raid, he would not be press-ganged into performing manual labor setting the base up, but of course that had nothing to do with his suggestion at all...

One day he was gonna learn what the hell a petro-rabbit was, and a vorn, and all those other archaic terms the Autobots kept using.

"Actually," Hunter grinned. "I might have just had a great idea. The snakes and the Decepticons don't know that we have Autobot support yet right?" He let that sink in for a second. "So lets play the part of the weak and defenseless humans that they'll expect us to play, lead them right into a trap and then spring our 'bots on them."

"You know he's just saying this to get out of unloading the cargo, right?" Pathfinder teased as he carried a howitzer's gun mount over to the line of artillery, holding it in place for the Joes to rapidly fasten to its base. Behind the Autobot, a Joe carried a machine gun over to its emplacement, looking like a smaller version of Pathfinder and the howitzer.

"Still, he's got a point." Pathfinder looked down at Flash, over twice the human's height. "The fastest armor should go out and start shootin' n' scootin', giving the Snakes something to think about as they advance. If we can get them to slow down, that will give us more time to prep the defenses here."

The way Pathfinder's optics were gleaming, it was clear he was willing to get out and play keep-away with the enemy. Those who knew him on Cybertron would recall Pathfinder loved that kind of running fight.

While still carrying the cargo and almost automatically going through the process of making sure the portable parts of the base were setup in proper sequence, Crosswind replied. Currently, he was in the middle of powering up and connecting the AA guns on the right flank.

"If that's the case, we'd better hurry with the setup if we're going to be giving the Cons and Snakes a proper hello," he said, assembling the AA cannon. "Once we're done with the basics, we can start making petro-rabbit traps for our guests out of the rubble around here. Let's make them feel like we're thanking them properly for this new base."

As he finished speaking, he connected up the third anti-air cannon, and activated the machine. A smile appeared on his faceplate briefly as it whirred to life, searching for active targets, and dropped into Standby mode. Time for the next one.

Stephanie moved her queen's knight into position to attack the black king's bishop. "We need to find another game," she said. "You always beat me now."

"What do you suggest?" a metallic voice replied. "Given the limitations of my size and your entertainment technology, the options are limited."

"Ma'am," said a voice from behind Stephanie. The scientist turned to see a tall young man enter the cargo bay.

"Lieutenant Stanfield," she replied. "What can I do for you?" She pronounced "lieutenant" as "leftenant".

"We received a SATCOM message. It's urgent. You had better come with me."

"Alright," she said, sliding off the stool. "No moving the pieces."

"I don't need to cheat," the other replied.

Doctor Killian followed Lieutenant Stanfield through the corridors of the ship and up several flights of stairs to the radio shack. The set in place was impossibly advanced, the product of Cybertronian technology. The operator nodded as they entered. Standfield dogged the door close behind them.

"We have received a warning of an immanent attack on Coldstaph base. Estimated within three hours."

"Shit," she swore. "We're still a day a way. Hell, they probably don't even know we're coming."

"They do," replied Stanfield, "but they don't know what we're carrying. For security reasons we're listed as just another supply ship. Our true cargo is completely secret. Need to know and all that."

"I understand," she said. She did, but it cut against the bone. Science was done by sharing results with other scientists and incorporating their discoveries into your own work. "What's the issue?"

"Our orders are to maintain complete secrecy until we arrive at Coldstaph and brief the commander on our cargo. Then we're under his command."

"Who is the commander?"

"Need to know. And we didn't."

"So they don't even know we exist and we don't even know who we're supposed to brief that we exist?"

"Yes ma'am. The proper term is SNAFU."

"SNAFU?"

"Situation Normal, All Fucked Up."

"Right. So as our orders stand we're supposed to report to them after they've endured a full scale attack and there might be an army of Germans and Decepticons waiting for us in the harbor."

"That's right ma'am."

"Or we could break radio silence and talk to them and help the people who are going to be our friends and comrades fight off an attack of ruthless fascists and killer robots."

"That's right. And since we both can talk through SATCOM, that's an option."

"And if Soundwave has compromised SATCOM, we're already compromised," added Stephanie.

"Soundwave?" asked Stanfield.

"You'll sleep better if I don't tell you," said Stephanie. "Trust me about this." She had gone through a period of about two weeks when she had worried that every innocuous item might be Soundwave or one of his minions in disguise.

She addressed the radio man. "Get me Coldstaph base, as fast as you can."

Special Forces Base Coldstaph
Estonia

In the comms room, the G.I. Joe Communications Expert Wireline had been working on the SATCOM link, when he heard it go off.

He nearly jumped into the seat, as he began pulling it up. Eyes roamed over the screen, as the headers for the message rolled through, and he confirmed it with the current codes.

"Wireline to Drake," he spoke into the black handset he picked up, "priority from SATCOM, need you in comms immediately."

It took five minutes for Drake, the Joe Commander for Coldstaph, to get into the comms room and enter his ID code. Seconds later, he spoke as the image appeared, "This is Lt Colonel Drake C.O. Coldstaph."

"Ma'am, I have the CO of Coldstaph on the horn."

"Thank you," said Stephanie as she took the radio set. "This is Doctor Stephanie Killian. We an en route to Coldstaph with supplies and reinforcements." She paused, took a deep breath, and then continued. "Elements of our party can arrive before the projected time of the attack, but I have to speak to the Autobots first."

"Very few people knew colonel," she said. "I don't know how much of it is from military secrecy or one group not wanting to share it's toys with another group, but I can assure you I wasn't consulted in making that decision. I can tell you I need to speak with an Autobot immediately or the results could be disastrous."
