#1 Study: Everyone hates environmentalists and feminists

Salon
Why don’t people behave in more environmentally friendly ways? New research presents one uncomfortable answer: They don’t want to be associated with environmentalists.

That’s the conclusion of troubling new research from Canada, which similarly finds support for feminist goals is hampered by a dislike of feminists.

Participants held strongly negative stereotypes about such activists, and those feelings reduced their willingness “to adopt the behaviors that these activities promoted,” reports a research team led by University of Toronto psychologist Nadia Bashir. This surprisingly cruel caricaturing, the researchers conclude, plays “a key role in creating resistance to social change.”

Writing in the European Journal of Social Psychology, Bashir and her colleagues describe a series of studies documenting this dynamic. They began with three pilot studies, which found people hold stereotyped views of environmentalists and feminists.

In one, the participants—228 Americans recruited via Amazon’s Mechanical Turk—described both varieties of activists in “overwhelmingly negative” terms. The most frequently mentioned traits describing “typical feminists” included “man-hating” and “unhygienic;” for “typical environmentalists,” they included “tree-hugger” and “hippie.”

Another study, featuring 17 male and 45 female undergraduates, confirmed the pervasiveness of those stereotypes. It further found participants were less interested in befriending activists who participated in stereotypical behavior (such as staging protest rallies), but could easily envision hanging out with those who use “nonabrasive and mainstream methods” such as raising money or organizing social events.

The results of three additional studies suggested this aversion to perceived stereotypical behavior impacts people’s behavior. In one of them, 140 Americans (again recruited via Mechanical Turk) read an article about climate change and “the need for individuals to adopt sustainable lifestyles.”

For one-third of the participants, the writer was described as a stereotypical environmentalist (his “profile” stated, “I hold rallies outside chemical research labs”). Another third were told he was an atypical, less-abrasive environmentalist (“I’m involved in organizing social events … to raise money for grassroots-level environmental organizations”). For the final third, his profile did not mention environmental activism at all.

After reading the article, participants were asked whether it inspired them to do more recycling, or otherwise take more eco-friendly actions.

“Participants were less motivated to adopt pro-environmental behaviors when these behaviors were advocated by the ‘typical’ environmentalist, rather than by the ‘atypical’ environmentalist or the undefined target,” the researchers report.

This is, needless to say, frustrating news for activists, and not just the ones mentioned here. The researchers suggest this dynamic may very well apply across the board, such as to activities advocating gay rights or Wall Street reform.

“Unfortunately,” they write, “the very nature of activism leads to negative stereotyping. By aggressively promoting change and advocating unconventional practices, activists become associated with hostile militancy and unconventionality or eccentricity.”

“Furthermore, this tendency to associate activists with negative stereotypes and perceive them as people with whom it would be unpleasant to affiliate reduces individuals’ motivation to adopt the pro-change behaviors that activists advocate.”

So the message to advocates is clear: Avoid rhetoric or actions that reinforce the stereotype of the angry activist. Realize that if people find you off-putting, they’re not going to listen to your message. As Bashir and her colleagues note, potential converts to your cause “may be more receptive to advocates who defy stereotypes by coming across as pleasant and approachable.”
Better titles for this article would have been:

Tone matters.
No one likes shrill and angry.
Hygiene matters.

Evangelists of any stripe are annoying. I know I'm an annoying space/nuke evangelist at times.

(Everybody "Annoying? At times? NO!" LOLOLOL.)

The problem with evangelists is that they typically don't realize the context of a conversation. Most of the time in casual settings, you want exactly that: casual conversation. But evangelists hear their topic of choice come up (or think they have an opportunity to discuss it) and next thing you know you're hip-deep in recruiting slogans for whatever their pet cause is. If you disagree at all, you get blizzarded with a pile of their chosen facts and rehearsed arguments for common objections, yadda yadda yadda.

Eventually you just wish a lightning bolt would strike them dead. Or you. Or you just get rude and cut it off.

E: Though it can be funny to derail them sometimes. I had a run-in with a Lolbertarian back in 2000, the Austin LP was actually considering him for a candidate for state or Federal congress, and maybe stealthing him in like they did Ron Paul. So I was pretty much a small-l libertarian in those days, but still I'm also an eternal contrarian. I asked him if he was one of those 'no Federal regs, no authority' Jeffersonian types. Oh yes. So I asked him what he thought would become of our industry (we were both truckdrivers back then) without any sort of Fed oversight. I mean, it was already a dirty, dangerous job with very uneven enforcement, and without the DoT watching and with our density of traffic, unregulated trucking would turn the roads into a fucking bloodbath.

He didn't have an answer for that. It was pretty sad, because I was a nominally friendly audience and he couldn't even sell me on his pitch.

After watching a large number of arguments about feminism - arguments I largely stay out of - I can only conclude that the word has functionally no coherent definition. In fact, a substantial portion of those arguments quickly spiral away from discussing women's rights and toward discussing the definition of feminism itself. Sometimes these get outright surreal: I once watched a self-described feminist try to convince a self-described men's rights advocate that he was actually a feminist (both were guys). They might as have the damn dictionary read, "Feminism (n), the phenomenon of people having strong opinions about women's rights."

(The only time I remember getting involved in one of those messes involved an Andrea Dworkin fanboy, and I simply could not resist the urge to get in there and start trolling his ass. It was worth a few laughs.)

To address the actual topic more directly. The problem with a lot of activists is that it is a fundamental part of human psychology to try to fit in with one's chosen social group, and activism is about reaching out to people outside that group. The two are in inherent conflict, and basic human nature tends to win out. Members of an activist group feel implicit pressure to show commitment for the cause by taking overt acts in support of it. The more members do this, the more pressure there is for the others to do so. This is actually useful for the leadership of such groups, because the more time and effort people put into a cause, the more committed they become to that cause. By encouraging such activities as loud rallies and protests, as well as radical changes in every day behaviour and life style, the activist group becomes more tight nit and its supporters more dedicated. This all feels like progress in advancing the cause, but in reality mostly serves to alienate it from mainstream society.

It's always pretty pathetic when I can make better arguments for positions I don't agree with than the people who actually hold them dear to their heart. In this case, the stock answer is that without the government to interfere and fuck up everything, the market will step in and set everything straight. I could expand on that but I think you get the idea. It's more fun with religious arguments, because then I get to break out the medieval philosophy. Sometimes the angry internet atheists haven't heard that before and are completely unprepared to deal with it. It's amusing to watch, even though I'm an atheist myself. My dearest hope is that one day I can get the religious nutcase to turn on me for being a heretic, since medieval religious philosophy is all Catholic, and most internet religious nutcases are protestants. Then I'd get to watch an atheist and a fundamentalist take the same side in a religious argument.

Oh yeah, I know the free market arguments quite well. Didn't particularly buy them then either- my libertarianism was always more of the personal freedom variety than the MAXIMUM UNFETTERED CAPITALISM variety. I was never a Randroid. That kid had just read the books and been to the meetings and had never put his brain to the thornier questions.

This reminds me of something. There's this novel called The Probability Broach that's full on anarco-capitalist alternate history with a side of inter-dimensional travelling. Short version is that a detective is from a late '80s USA were the liberals have taken over and everything is gray, opressive, overregulated, and vaguely communist, winds up via in a USA were George Washington was shot for treason after the Whisky Rebellion, the Articles of Confederation reinstated, and shit's so good without government that by the same late '80s everyone's got fusion-powered hovercars.

I didn't read the novel, but the author decided to make a webcomic out of it and I did read that for a while. The thing is, while I found the premise of the story to be insane and delusional in the extreme, the story itself was actually kind of interesting and enjoyable... or it would have been if the author wouldn't stop the plot on a regular basis to preach to the audience. That endless, tedious preaching and his utterly ham-handed presentation bogged everything down until I couldn't take it any more.

It's interesting because the author is talented and skilled enough to make a story worth reading, and in the case of the webcomic was working with a good artist, but it was all derailed by the sheer insanity of his views and his pathological need to preach them. I'm sure this makes him real popular amongst people who are already hardcore libertarians, but it's ineffective at making anyone else sympathetic to his views or willing to spend money on his books. I mean, my political views are anathema to his, but a good story is a good story, and he had my attention with it until he unwittingly sabotaged his own efforts.

Oh yes, good old L. Neil Smith. The wannabe Rand/Heinlein of the modern age. Has the worst tendency to have all his villains be simplistic strawmen who are burned with ease by his Gary Stu protagonists. (Even though Pallas demonstrated in the story why his particular bent would fail in an extreme situation, had the entire society not been rescued by the selfless dedication of his protag.)

His running buddy Victor Milan is just as extreme, but writes a lot more palatable material that usually doesn't bury the story in rhetoric. His Camacho's Caballeros fic was the best Battletech stuff going. (The Cat will probably back me on that one.)

Smith is good for some excellent quotes, though. The two that I'm fond of are (Paraphrased) "The term 'criminal justice system' is very fitting" and "Look in the mirror, open your mouth and count your teeth. One-two-three-four, these are not the teeth of a cud-chewing herbivore."

He can be pretty witty when he's not engaged in tedious preaching or infodumps. I took a quick look at the webcomic again, reading a couple of chapters at random, and found the exchange in the last two panels of this page hilarious. The idea that Jefferson made America give up slavery a few pages later was also hilarious, but for all the wrong reasons. If anyone could have done it by word alone it would be John Quincy Adams, and by God in the real world he tried, he really really tried.

You know, I have to give Smith credit for one thing. He made his main character an Ute Indian and didn't make a big deal of it, the guy just... was. It comes up once when Win Bear wants to know if his alternate reality counterpart had the same parents, and it's never mentioned again. It's unfortunate that I have yet to see any other fiction do that. Either Native Americans don't exist, or else they all have all this spiritual stuff going on.

Oh God, that bullshit. I remember that webcomic. I read it decades ago and found it utterly unmoving. If a soceity can't protect itself then it's a failure just as a start. Not to mention the sheer amount of magic wand waving that fixes the variety of underlying problems that make things...

No, no, I'm not doing this rant again. Sorry.

I used to lurk at his online newsletter, The Libertarian Enterprise. I think the funniest thing I saw was how they started lawyering up on the ZAP.

For those who aren't familiar, the ZAP is the Zero Aggression Principle, which for Smith and his ilk is the ideal single rule of existence: no one has the right to initiate force against another or solicit the initiation of force against another, for any reason.

There are those who honestly believe this is all society needs to exist, but then they started arguing about this case or that case. (One guy was hilariously arguing that includes insulting people, as that's an act of force. As was pointed out, that makes Smith a huge violator of his own golden rule.)

Ultimately of course it just demonstrated why we have an entire body of law with all those fussy technical details.

See, that's why I just called it fantastical and delusional in the extreme and left it at that.

The Caballeros books were excellent, but Charette's Heir to the Dragon was the best single Battletech book.

But yeah it's completely whacky. Of course I've gotten libertarians to foam at the mouth when I've said that the first duty of a state is to protect its own existance, because without that none of the other principles matter. (And I also naturally believe in safeguards against needlessly encroaching on public liberties in the name of safety).

I always find it funny when I can ask someone who does not like environmentalists a series of propositions.

1. Do you think removing the tops of mountains and spreading the toxic waste products through West Virginia's entire watershed is a good idea?
--Answer usually no

2. Do you think we need better safety and anti-pollution standards and enforcement in various oil extraction operations?
--answer usually yes

3. If you found out that certain pesticides/industrial effluent/agricultural effluent should be more strictly regulated due to their damaging health effects and the harm they cause such as reproductive side effects and cancer?
--answer usually yes

4. Whaling and overfishing?
--answer usually bad

5. Do you think we should try to protect endangered species/gorgeous natural beauty?
--answer is usually yes

6. Alternative energy sources? Wind, solar, wave power etc?
--answer usually "good idea", nuclear power is an option of course

Congratulations. You are an environmentalist. Not all of us are luddite hippies. Some of us like nuclear power and GMOs, incidentally. Hi.

I do the same thing with feminism. The word--not the ideology--is the issue. Or rather, the negative stereotype spinsters have created in their messaging. It does not help that some of my fellow environmentalists are luddite hippies, and some of my fellow feminists are in fact either straw-feminists or what I like to call "Privilege Hounds" who rail against any sort of privilege to the point that they alienate literally everyone and lose their ability to engage in productive discussion. Heaven forbid you explain to someone what privilege is, and then show someone how their say, male privilege, might affect their perspective such that they are factually incorrect or making an ass of themselves. Nope. Scream at them to Check Their Privilege and thus teach them nothing...
