Though if I could bring a person who wasn't from the board, I know quiet a few people who are proficient at hunting deer with bow and arrow....
otherwise, we could also make use of crossbows with metal tipped wooden shafts, not sure if Middle Earth had crossbows.....
If they don't, we can easily, thanks to the library, distribute the "technology" out, make them readily available to the masses....and then kill Grima with a crossbow (I'm decent with those).

As previously mentioned, I'm a pretty good shot with a bow. Granted, there's limits as to how accurate you can be over long distances, and with good reason.
The only real advantages to a crossbow is ease of use and higher(?) penetrating power. It'd be easier to manufacture than guns, to be sure, but I don't think it would give us any sort of major edge. We already have guns and sufficient ammo. I doubt I could have my precious M1 Garand, but I could get by with something else.
Concerning Grima, once again, it comes down to Gandalf. Theoden doesn't know any of us from Adam, but he has a certain level of trust when it comes to Gandalf. He'd be much more likely to listen to him than to any of us. Assassinating a trusted aide is only going to get us fucked, and the only way we could strike him down beyond the visible range of the court or the people is with a sniper rifle, and if word begins to spread of us having weapons capable of striking men down from leagues away, well, Theoden is going to be mighty pissed off. There's no question of Grima's treachary by the time of the books. Eighteen years beforehand? No clue. The intial seeds may be planted, but certainly nothing like what we see.
Honestly, Gandalf is our greatest ally through all of this. If we can let him in on the secret movements of Isengard and Mordor to the best of our knowledge, he may be able to act early on to prevent such things. Ridding Rohan of Grima early on means that Isengard has a counter. If we can strengthen Minas Tirith, they can counter Mordor. Maybe if we can get Aragorn to reclaim the throne earlier, that might give the boost we need.
Also, our presence in Middle Earth will rightly not go undetected for long. There are merely thirty of us or so, we'd appear as a wandering band of mercenaries or bandits or somesuch, not as a national military force. A nomadic group with unknown goals walking around who knows where. The sooner we seek the aid of the elves, the better.
Taking on Saruman directly, by the by, is not a good idea without help. He's a roughly Gandalf-level power, and should not be considered lightly. It's questionable if a sniper rifle round will be enough to kill him, assuming the shot even gets to him. If we fuck up an assassination, retribution could be swift and brutal.
Much as it would be nice to "Connecticut Yankee" a solution, I myself would not want to spend the time on that. We have an advantage in intelligence of enemy situations and plans, and the longer we wait, the more those will change. By inserting ourselves into the situation, we will have effects on the unfolding of events we cannot ourselves predict. The faster we act, the better. If we wait too long, our plans and knowledge could be scryed out by magical or conventional means, and we will have lost that advantage, leaving us with a limited supply of modern technology and a reasonable amount of modern education. If we are reduced to this, our only hope becomes the education of the races of man, giving them the knowledge to better arm themselves and to better protect against Isengard and Mordor.

In regards to crossbows, do we have anyone here who's familiar on how to make the type that uses the person's body weight to draw back the bow?
As I recall, they were actually devoloped in an attempt create a new "superweapon" to gain tactical advantage over the enemy. It actually worked too, until the enemy started using them as well.
I'd think those shouldn't be too difficult to mass produce, and would give a very significant edge to us and potential allies.

The problem is that if you want crossbows with any kind of significant penetrating power against armor, because of the short bow, you're gonna have to use one powerful enough that you can't draw them with your arms/body weight. There's a reason the majority of war crossbows back in the day were cranked...
Lighter crossbows like you suggest would be adequate against a lightly armoured foe, though, so I'd recommend producing them anyway; they would also be of use in hunting and visible guard duty (when our sentries are marching about in plain sight... cuts down on public knowledge about our modern weapons, if that's a factor).

Things to bring:
Basic Chemistry/Physics/Biology/Botany Texts (ultra condensed, the kind with no fluff at all, fit a year's material in to something smaller than a reader's digest)
Basic Medicine/First Aid/etc. We'll need people who can do basic lifesaving techniques, and potentially even basic surgery. Also, basic medical supplies. They won't last long, but could save lives for as long as they do. Finding new sources of clean bandages and antiseptics will be a priority.
Agriculture texts/seeds: We can offer superior knowledge of agriculture in exchange for other goods. Also, depending on if we need to set up a small town somewhere, part of the group can be made to supply food over the long term for everyone else.
Armed Forces Manuals, Various: Survival Guides, trapmaking, etc.
Cookbooks. We can trade recipes with hobbits, potentially. Also maybe make some good friends by preparing very fine meals.
Tough clothing. Heavy Duty materials, but as lightweight as we can make them. We can worry about dealing with winter as it comes, but we want things that won't wear out easily. Workboots, socks, leggings especially. Eventually, we should attempt to trade for elven materials, but we can't rely on that in the first months/years.
On that note: Sewing materials, just the basics, needles and threads. We can eventually make our own or rely on trade to get what we need, but this little additional space can keep our 30+ sets of clothing from getting tattered too quickly should something not go according to plan. If nothing else, we can trade them to royal clothiers as mastercrafted tools of the trade (we'll not mention Wal-Mart).
Tools. We'll need a basic set, nothing overly fancy (no alan wrenches), but things like axes, mauls, wedges, hammers, and so on will be very useful early on. We can just bring the heads of the tools if need be, and make wooden handles on site in order to keep the masses down. Things like Leathermans will be handy as well. Sharpening devices are a priority as well. Suggest diamond sharpeners for light weight and superior sharpening quality. Whetstones can be found/traded for easily enough.
Very basic fishing kit, some lightweight rods and some nets. If we really need to survive on fish, we'll have to see about netting a river. Not a huge priority, however, can be constructed on site with appropriate materials.

Also, any natural linguists should set out on learning as many languages as possible, if we have enough time or need it.

String. Absolutely always bring string. Nylon monofilament would serve for quick sewing repairs, plus it can be sterilized for surgical work. Nylon para-cord would be INVALUABLE-- strong, can be made into nets, will hold just about forever. Also some rope-- climber's rope is strong, takes a lot of beating, and will similarly last well.
Also bring a few small personal items. We all have little bits we wouldn't know what to do without, I'm sure... I know I do.
Hmm... oh yes. Get a bunch of cheap folding knives, something like the classic Buck lockback. Not only do they look decent, they'd make nifty little trade items.

I have a small library of texbooks I can bring, as well as dissection kits and the like which can be used to perform basis surgury once they are sterilized...All of which can fit in my backpack. i can also bring seed which I can crossbreed to produce better crops. Because we will run out of food eventually... Oh and technical drawing s for things like the gutenber printing press, looms and other such invaluable devices.
Also, the Bellybow. If we want to sell weapons to people like Rohan, we might want to take a look at that. Itis cheaply mass produced and can be used by anyone with almost no training. It can also be spanned by children. It would allow vilages to fight in their own defense should they be attacked by bands of goblins or human barbarians

Has for the arguement of laying low or not, I say not. We gain absolutly nothing by laying low, however contact with Gandalf brings us access to manpower, resources and trustworthy allies. Getting Gandalf fast is vital, has is talking him into letting us kill or otherwise nuetralize Saurmon. (Bluntly I think he turned a long time ago, maybe 40 years after the Hobbit.) Has for the ringbearer, I say we do not put anyone near him.
No offense guys but most of ya have some pretty deep dark sides and some messy issues in your lives there and frankly I'm not trusting y'all with a 9 mil 10ft away from "unlimited power." To be perfectly honest I don't want to be within 50ft of the damn thing. Keep it away from me and me away from it. The mix of rifle weilding human and the one ring is a bad one. Not to say we can't ease the way a little just that we need to do it from a distance.

Hell FM has seen my dark0side, reveling in the torture schene in Braveheart... I am not going near that damn ring.
Also, there are certain things we cant do. We cant take out the balrog. Gandlf's "death" at its hands is instrumental for Gandalf becoming more powerful...
We CAN turn the tide in the forest though, and keep Boromir from dying... Go into Helm's deep and A: Make that culvert smaller and B: Reinforce the gate with iron and maybe, just maybe, install a second door. The weakest part of any fortress is the god damn gate...

Come now FM, we're expecting you to lead the team which will grab the Hobbit and drag him to Mt Doom in a small convoy of Hummers (we'll save the hummers just for this mission I'd wager)
With enough distraction, maybe some homemqade artillary, we could provide a mighty fine distraction at the Black Gate for you two to get in, or even if we can finagle a way to make a Ultra Light......we could have Scott fly you two in....
Then again...Scott within five feet of the One Ring...
And I protest, I do not have a deep dark side, I'm just deeply disturbed.

The ring is a massive temptation. I'm not sure I would trust myself with it even. We can all say "oh, we're strong willed, we can resist it". Who here smokes? Drinks often? Eats more than they should? Posts here when they should be doing a term paper?
Every little flaw you have will be amplified by the ring. It will tempt you, offering you all that you want, and more, without even your knowledge. The thoughts will seem to be yours, because they are, they're just being stimulated by the ring.
We cannot be trusted with it. The only people I consider safe to hold it are Frodo and Samwise. Their Guardians should consist of Aragorn, Legolas, Gandalf, and Gimli. Boromir should join us in battle against the foe, we know he cannot be trusted. Merry and Pippen, if they do come, should join the fellowship as per normal. Worst case scenario, they could carry the ring for a short while, should Frodo and Sam bite it.
